Paper Making Process
All the papers that we see and use every day are made from a very lengthy process. Initially, pulping will be carried out to separate the necessary parts and also to clean the fibers. In the next step, refining process will be carried out. Similarly, dilution is carried out in the next phase. This is done to form the thin fiber mixture.
After that, the fibers are formed on a thin screened. Then, the pressure is applied on it to increase the material’s density. Similarly, in the next step, drying techniques are carried out to eliminate the product’s density. Finally, a finishing process is carried out to obtain a smooth surface that would be suitable for usage. The pulp and paper is the product of cellulose fibers and other plant products. However, in some cases, synthetic materials such as bagasse, flax and cotton liners are also used. Formerly used paper can also be used to manufacture a new one. For this, the old paper needs to be purified and put through the deinking process. Then, it is mixed with the virgin fibers to be reformed into paper. In addition, other products such as rayon, cellulose acetate, etc., will be used for making explosives, packaging films, etc.
The pulping process’s main aim is to remove the lignin in the product while maintaining the fiber strength at the same time. In other words, all the fibers are freed, and impurities are removed. Also, this helps to avoid any sort of discoloration and disintegration of paper in the future.
It is made sure that hemicellulose is present in the paper-making process along with cellulose. This is because both of these play an important role in fiber-to-fiber bonding. Softwood / Hardwood – Which is better?
Usually, softwoods possess long and strong fibers. So they offer good strength to paper. Also, they are popularly used in creating boxes and packaging products. On the other hand, hardwoods give a weaker paper due to their shorter fibers. Paper made from softwood is more preferred for printing purposes too. However, there is also a tradition of creating paper by mixing both soft and hardwood. A mixture of these will give a good strength and printing ability to the developed paper product.
Steps in Pulp and Papermaking
Preparing Raw Materials
Wood that is brought to the mill can have forms, shapes and sizes. It may be in the shape of bolts, ships or any other type. When round wood is used, it is initially debarked by tumbling in the large steel drums where the wash water will be applied. The debarked wooden bolts are chipped and put through a process called chemical digestion. The product is then screened, cleaned and further processed.
Separating the Fiber
In this step, several pulping methods are diverged. The chips are inserted into a large digester. In this, the necessary chemicals are added, which facilitates the pulping process as a whole. Chips are then treated with steam up to certain temperatures. This helps to separate the fibers and also dissolves the lignin and other extracts.
After cooking the pulp is placed in a pressure vessel. In this step, volatile substances are tubed off, and the pulp is sent back to the recovery. The logs are then forced against grinding wheels. Refined and thermos-mechanical pulps are produced in this step. Basically, the pulp is screened, cleaned and water is removed.
Bleaching
Lignin and other stuff must be bleached to produce the light-colored and white papers. Fibers are again dignified from cellulose through the process of chlorination and oxidation. A strong alkali such as Sodium Hydroxide is used to extract the lignin from the surface.
The mechanical bleaching process varies from chemical bleaching. The mechanical bleaching is done to reduce the removal of lignin which would reduce the fiber yields. On the other hand, mechanical bleaching helps to get rid of the coloring impurities and helps to make the final product attractive, clear and use-worthy.
Papermaking
Both bleached and unbleached pulp is further refined to cut fibers and roughen the surface. This helps in enhancing the formation and bonding of fibers as they go through the machine. Water is added to the mixture. The slurry is then cleaned and screened before finally putting it through the paper maker. In the end, the dilute stock is passed through a headbox which distributes the slurry in a uniform manner according to the width of a paper sheet being created.
