ION Exchange Technology In A Sugar Refinery

 ION exchange technology was introduced into the sugar refinery process in the 1970s. This is the far most the best technology which is being used to date by the sugar industry.

The ION exchange is a continuous process whereby sugar liquor is passed through a resin bed, and the color is trapped within the bed. The bed of resin becomes saturated with color after some time. The liquor needs contact time with the resin for effective color removal. The flow rate in relation to the amount of resin present is important. The beds are washed with water to remove traces of the caustic brine.

After that, the bed is sweetened on again in preparation for the next production run.
